Appearance
The dragonfly has large wings, basket-like legs, and a large head. The
adult head has large eyes, and short antennae. It's mouth is used only
to catch flies and eat.
The legs
are in the front of the body and are used mainly to cling onto leaves and
twigs.
Most dragonflies
wings are 5 to 8 cm, but the usual size for a tropical dragonfly's wings
are 20 cm!!!!
The dragonfly
has developed gills connected to their tracheae, to send oxygen to their
tracheae, and then to the rest of the body.
Babies
Most of the time, dragonflies drop their eggs
into the water. The eggs spend most of their lives underwater as nymphs.
The nymphs have a special extendable hinged mask over their mouths that
can reach forward to grasp food.
Eventually
the nymphs will crawl out of the water (about 2-3 years later) and will
grow wings and become an adult.
Types
There are about 5900 different types of dragonflies. Some popular types
are: darning needle
snake feeder
snake doctor and
mosquito hawk
Tropical
dragonflies have the biggest wings, but all the different types eat flies
and the larvae of other aquatic animals and live in lakes and rivers.
