Pondweed
Pondweed is a plant that grows in water, especially calm water. They are found in lakes, streams and coastal waters. They usually branch upward from their beds, but do not always extend some of their straight to elliptical leaves above the surface.
They often have two kinds of leaves. One kind are firm, broad leaves which float on the water's surface. Another kind are soft, narrow leaves which are found under the water's surface.
Pondweed has small, green flowers which are found on the water's surface. The small green to brown flowers are borne in clusters on spikes. Their fruits are hard, tiny nuts. Ducks and other waterfowl feed on this plant.
Canadian pondweed ( a North American species) has stems that grow below the surface of the water. They may reach 10 feet or 3 meters in length. This type of pondweed spreads very rapidly, and has blocked many canals and rivers.
