The himalayan
red panda is a mammal found in the lower regions of the Himalayan Mountains.
It makes it's home in hollow logs or dens.
At an elevation
of 2000-4800 the air is cool and moist. The red panda is a smaller relative
of the giant panda but there is some controversy that it is a closer relative
to racoons and squirrels. It is a member of the order of carnivora and
it likes to eat bird's eggs, insects, and plants. It has fir on the soles
of the feet so it can get a better grip on snowy ground. It has many names
such as the lesser panda, hun-ho, wah, and the red cat bear.
In the spring
there are one or two babies born per female. The babies weigh four ounces
and stay with the mother for one year.
In closing the
Himalayan red panda is an endangered species and humans are destroying
their habitat for construction. We need to start preserving our natural
habitats.
