The following Grassroots Project focusses on the earth's crust unit of the grade 8 Science Directions program. Following class discussions on the characteristics of igneous intrusive/ extrusive, mineral formation and tests used to identify them, students carried out a number of investigative activities.
This initial research of selected minerals came through a variety of printed and electronic resources i.e.. library, CD rom, internet, geological web sites etc. A local geologist also visited the school and gave a presentation with the students involved in some hands on activities.
Having saved and edited material for suitable content, as per curriculum guide, students were required to prepare, laminate and index card sign display of their work. This information was then used to create a database of all links to related web sites.
In all
a total of 3 classes and 69 students participated in this activity which
ran from February 25 to April 28, 2002.
Students used a number of Web Sites for their research, and the following
are excellent resources for more information.
