Anthracite
  Is a hard coal and one of  the fossil fuels. Electric power generation, steel making plants , and homes used to consume large quantities of coal. Due to air pollution we now use oil, natural gas, propane and the electricity generated by water or atomic power. one extract  from coal is the oily wood preservative called creosote, used railroad ties. another is tar for road repairs roofing, etc. The chemical  industry uses  by- products of coal also. Coal  has its origin in the prehistoric forests and swamps which became buried to great depths  during  millions  of  years . Anthracite hardness is 2 - 2.5.
