Apatite

Apatite is from the Greek word "apatos" meaning deception because of its wide variety of shapes and colors.
It is soluble in HCI, and is often flourescent or thermoluminescent. It is mainly used as a source of phosphates for fertilizer.

Apatite is a fairly common mineral found in many prismatic well shaped crystals. Apatite can be colorless, blue, green, gray, asparagus green, sea green, yellow brown, pink, violet and milk white. It can be found in Canada, USA, Brazil, Sri Lankra and Maine. The crystals are hexagonal (prism is very common). It is "5" on the Mohs scale of hardness.

It is stable in many environments including, hydrothermal veins, metamorphics, as well as chemical deposition. Apatite is found in pegmatites, metamorphic and igneous rock. The yellowish green is well known in magnetite deposits found in Mexico, the violet colors in Germany. Also large crystals have occurred in New York and yellow crystals are found in North Carolina. The asparagus green is more of a collectors gem because it is both soft and brittle ; therefore it is not used for jewelry.
