"The Diary of a Young Girl"  by Anne Frank
 A Review by Emily

Summary:
This book is about Anne Frank and her family. They are Jewish and they are forced into hiding because Hitler wants to kill all the Jews. They are brought to concentration camps.  They spend the rest of  their short life there.  Otto Frank, her dad, lives through the war and publishes Anne’s book.  This is one of  the most widely read books in the world.

Suspense: This story seems like it would never end.  It kept me guessing.  There were many times I felt they were going to be caught.  They had to be very quiet because there were always spies watching for Jews.  Anne and her family faced hunger, boredom, conflicts and death.

Character Development: I learned a lot about each character.  I found out how they lived their lives.  It seems I know Anne Frank so well.  I could tell you her favorite colour, favorite food and the torture she endured.  Since this is a diary, the reader learns many details about each character.

Important Lessons: I think I learned an important lesson to not take things for granted.  My opinion was that Hitler’s decision to kill all Jews was horrible.  Why did he have such a prejudice toward this religion?  There were a lot of lessons to be learned that weren’t learned.  But I am sure if they had another chance they would treat Jews with respect.

Imagination: Anne Frank had a vivid imagination!  It was so clear to me how they would sit around a radio for all information.  It paints a picture in my head after every page.  This book is a true story.  I think it is wonderful that I can understand what they are going through.  It tells me all about 1942 to 1946 and all the suffering the Jews went through.

Difficulty:  This book taught me a lot of new words.  It was not too hard and not to easy. I think it would be hard for a younger child to understand.  The plot is intense and depressing.  The plot is not too hard because Anne tells her own story in detail.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to everyone in the class because it is a true story!

The Diary Is Left Behind:

While Anne Frank was in hiding, she kept a diary. She was planning on it being published after the war. So she rewrote her diary in good copy. When the Frank family was found in hiding, her diary including her good copy was flown across the floor with no respect. They were boarded on to the train with no diary. They got sent to concentration camp, and stayed together until they got to second concentration camp. There Anne was separated from her beloved father. Anne and Margot stayed together until they died Anne’s father Otto Frank survived through concentration camp and published Anne’s diary. Anne’s diary is one of the most widely read books in the world.  It is published in 96 different languages.
