"Orphan at my Door" by Jean Little
A Review by Jacinta
Summary -
Orphan at My Door is a daily diary of Victoria Cope who lives in Guelph, Ontario.  The years that this diary covers are 1897 and 1898.  One thing Victoria mentions a lot is the home child, Mary-Anna.  Who was sent from England to the Copes’ household?  The twelve-year-old Mary-Anna and the eleven-year-old Victoria go through tragic and happy times together.

Suspense - The novel I chose was a diary there for it contains mild suspense.

Character Development - I really got to know the characters well because the author described each one’s different personality.  Victoria was curious, kind and active.  Mary-Anna was kind but could be demanding.  Father was kind and hard working.  Mother was sweat, hard working and always looked out for her family.

Important Lessons - Mary-Anna’s younger brother Jasper learned that not all Canadian families are bad.

Imagination - Jean Little’s words make the character come alive.  Her words are so descriptive; you can imagine the character clearly.

Difficulty - There were new vocabulary words to be learned.

I would strongly recommend this novel by Jean Little to grade five students.

Jean Little is a great writer.  She started writing when she was 12 years old.  If you see Jean you’ll notice a dog by her side.  Why you ask?  Jean is a blind writer.  How does Jean write her Books?  She has a computer that reads back what she writes.  How does Jean get her ideas?  To Jean they just walk into her mind demanding to be written about.  If Jean feels like she can’t finish the book it’s like killing the character and that the only way they can live is if she finishes the book.  Jean has also won many awards and is a part of the order of Canada.
