"Left Out Or Right On"
Are
you Left out, or right on?
1)
Problem: How does one’s
handedness affect foot, eye, and ear preference?
2)
Hypothesis: I think right handed people will close
there right eye, kick with there right foot and use there left ear. I
think left handed people will close there left eye, kick with there left foot,
and use there left ear.
3)
Materials:10
right handed volunteers
10 left handed volunteers
Soccer ball
Cardboard tube
Toy bow and arrow set
Small cardboard box
Macaroni
Tape
4)
Procedure:
Testing
foot preference
1) I had each volunteer stand in front of a soccer ball. I asked them to
kick it and I recorded which foot each volunteer
used to kick the ball.
2) I had each volunteer stand at the bottom of a staircase. I asked them
to climb the stairs and I recorded which foot they used to begin there climb.
Testing
for eye preference
1) I asked each volunteer to look through a cardboard tube. I recorded
which eye they used.
2) I asked each volunteer to shoot the bow and arrow at an object across
the room. I recorded which eye was left open.
Testing
for ear preference
1) I asked each volunteer to put there ear up to a wall to see if they
can hear what’s
going on in the next room. I recorded which ear they put up to the wall.
2) I asked each volunteer to shake a box full of macaroni and I asked them what’s inside the box. I recorded which ear they held the box up to.

Conclusion: Most left-handed
people use their left foot, left eye, and left ear. Most right-handed people
used their right foot, right eye, and right ear. This proved that my hypothesis
was correct.
*
I noticed that a lot of people could use both feet for kicking the ball. Not a
lot of people could use both right and left for their eye and ear testing.
*
A lot of the left-handed adults I tested, used there right foot, eye, and ear
more then the children who were left- handed.
Project
Summary
How did I come up
with my project idea?
My mom and I were
searching through books and we thought that this project looked interesting. I
was really keen on doing this as it was something I knew that I would enjoy and
learned from.
What
did I learn from my experiment?
I
learned that a lot of right-handed people use there right foot, eye, and ear and
a lot of left-handed people left foot, eye, and ear.
How
close were my hypothesis and conclusion?
I
guessed that left-handed people would use their left foot, eye, and ear and
right-handed people would use their right foot, eye, and ear and I was right.
Did
I learn anything new from my project?
I
learned that some left-handed people and some right-handed people could use both
feet to kick the ball but they couldn’t use both right and left ear or eye.
What
was the most interesting part of my project?
The most interesting
part of my project was when my hypothesis and conclusion matched. I also enjoyed
testing people. It was very interesting to observe people doing the tasks
that were part of my experiment as I found myself predicting what the results
would be.
