"The Greenhouse Effect"

What is the green house effect?

The  green  house effect  is  the  rise  of  temperature  that  happens when certain  gases

become trapped in our atmosphere. These gases trap energy from the sun.  Without

these  gases  the  earth’s  average  temperature  would  be  60 degrees F  colder  than  it  is  now.

What causes the green house effect?

The temperature rise is caused by  gases such as  water  vapours, nitrous  oxide, carbon  dioxide, methane, and  ozone, which get caught in our atmosphere and trap energy from the sun.

What happens if the green house effect continues?

Some  places  will  get  better  like  Africa because the rise in temperature will increase  farming . Some places will get worse like Greenland, where  melting  ice  caps will lead to heavy pack ice. In Russia there will be a sharp  fall  in  grain  crop  yields  and  the  same  in  the U.S.  In  Brazil  there will be a  failure of the anchovy  fisheries.

How can we help?

Cars are important to people but they increase greenhouse gases so we should car pool take the bus or walk. We can also reduce the amount of gases by recycling to decrease the amount of garbage that is burned.

Experiment Introduction

In my project I was trying to find out the effect that the sun’s rays have on our environment and if the temperature would go up if the rays were in an enclosed space.

Hypothesis

I think that when the sun’s rays are captured in an enclosed space the temperature of our earth increases.

Question

My question is what effect does sunlight have on our environment when it’s in an enclosed space?

Materials

glass bowl, dish cloth, lamp, thermometer

Conclusion

I  thought  that  the    temperature   would  rise  when   heat  is  captured  in  an  enclosed  space   and  I  was  right,  the  temperature  did  go  up.

Project Summary

1. How  did  I  come  up  with  my  project  idea ?

I  got  my  project  idea  from  my  mom .  She  asked me  when  I  was  playing  what  I was going  to  do my  science  project  on.  My Mom told me about the greenhouse effect and so I decided to do my project on that.

2. What did I learn from my experiment ?

From  my  project  I  learned   that  every  100  years  the  temperature  of  our  world goes  up one degree  because  of  the  green  house  gases  but  since  more  pollution  is  getting  into  our  atmosphere  the  temperature  might   go  up  sooner.

3. How  close  were  my  hypothesis  and  my  conclusion

I  guessed  that  the  temperature  would   increase  and  I  was  right.

4. Did  I  learn  anything  new  from  my  project ?

Yes,  I  learned  that  if  you  don’t  pollute, the  green  house  effect  won’t  have  as  much  of  an  effect.

5. What was the most interesting thing I learned ?

I  learned  that  if  there  wasn’t  a  green  house  effect  then  the  average   temperature  would  be  60  degrees  colder  then  it  is  now.
