St. Michael's is committed to helping students grow together socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually, which for self and others thus becoming responsible, capable citizens of an ever-changing world. 

Students

Rights:    
To be treated with respect and dignity.
To be safe from personal and physical injury, harassment, threats, abuse and discrimination.
To learn in a secure and comfortable environment.
To have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and develop the skills to become a lifelong learner.
To be treated fairly and equally.
To have my religious doctrines and beliefs respected.
To be cared for, encouraged and supported, both at school and at home.


Responsibilities:
To respect the rights of peers, teachers, parents and other adults.
To listen when someone is speaking.
To conduct myself in a way that does not interfere with safety learning of others.
Learn and practice acceptable manners.
To develop positive work habits and to complete homework assignments.
To obey classroom rules and those rules that ensure respect for property, maintain a safe school environment and promote good citizenship.
To keep my parents informed.
To arrive at school each day punctually, well-prepared, properly dressed and ready to cooperate and learn.
To accept the consequences of my behavior.
Be courteous to peers, teachers, parents and all others. 


Teachers

Rights:    
To recognize as a trained professional, qualified to make decisions which affect the learning and development of children.
To have adequate teacher representation in the decision-making process as it affects school policy and school effectiveness.
To be supported by colleagues and the community in their work and efforts with children.
To have professional differences respected by students, colleagues and the community.
To work in a nonviolent, safe environment.


Responsibilities:
To treat each child with respect and dignity.
To understand and appreciate each child is a unique individual and to help each chief full potential.
To teach the knowledge, skills and values in the "Program of Studies" is devised by the Department of Education.
To work in partnership with the home, and where necessary, other agencies, for the growth and development of each student.
To make the school environment the pleasant than safe place to promote learning.
Demonstrate self discipline and responsibility, to be punctual and well-prepared.
To work collaboratively with colleagues.
To pursue professional growth and development.
To be a positive role model, by promoting well-being in the school environment.
To be an advocate for children and to adhere to the "Child Welfare Act" and the School Board Policy on Child Abuse.


Parents

Rights:    
To know that the school is doing its outpost to provide a safe and secure environment for my child. 
To be informed about, and involved in, the physical, personal, intellectual and social development of my child.
To respected as a concerned parent who wishes to understand and be understood.
To be given a written course outline and evaluation criteria for each course.
To be given a written code of behavior that students are expected to adhere to while attending St. Michael's school.



Responsibilities:
To teach my child to respect the rights of others and their property.
To be aware of and involved in my child's interests and education.
To teach the values which will help my child become a responsible member of our Canadian society.
To communicate relevant information to the school concerning the personal well-being of my child.
To be a positive role model.
Provide a positive learning environment (e.g.  Designated time and place for homework and, when necessary, check to see home assignments are completed).
To care for the medical needs of my child (e.g. eye examinations, etc.)
To consider suggestions from school personnel that may enhance much else performance.
To ensure that each day my child arrives at school on time, well rested, clean and dressed appropriately.
To follow school rules a set by the administration (parking, school visits, etc.).
To be an advocate for my child.


Consequences of Inappropriate Behavior

Consequences for inappropriate behavior are essential components of an efficient, well disciplined and safe school.  Rules to govern student behaviors are necessary to ensure children at St. Michael's feel safe and that a quality learning environment is established.

The rights, and dignity and safety of all students are paramount when applying consequences for undesirable behavior.  Students who violate established rules and negatively affect the learning environment of St. Michael's will be subjected to consequences deemed necessary by appropriate school personnel.

Course of action:
The course of action will take into consideration the age of the child, and the seriousness, and frequency of the undesirable behavior.
Provide verbal, a written explanation of inappropriate behavior by student.
Discuss impact of behavior with student.
Chart and review behavior with student.
Assigning class detention.
Contact parent or guardian.
Withdraw designated privileges (cafeteria, loss, recreational, etc.).
The Sun in school suspension.
Invoke out of school suspension.
Provide compensation to victims (thefts/vandalism).
Involve administration, counselor and appropriate outside agencies (Social Services, Mental Health, RCMP).
Transfer to another learning environment.

It is the goal of St. Michael's that each and every child respect the rights and dignity of fellow students and staff.  Each child should work towards self discipline in accordance with St. Michael's Code of Behavior.

Respect for Self

I must come to school with a willingness to learn, and to respect the rights of others.
I must attend school regularly and be on time for class.
I am expected to be prepared for classes and have all necessary materials.
I understand that I should come to school well groomed and wear appropriate clothing and have the necessary shoes, clothes and equipment needed for classes such as physical education.

Respect for Others
I am expected to know and follow all the rules of the school and cooperate with all personnel, while in school or on school property.
I am expected follow rules established by my school and by the bus driver, while on field trips.
I am expected to show respect for others and their feelings by being courteous and considerate.  I will use proper language and avoid harassing others.
I am expected to observe all safety rules, forbidden to carry objects which could injure myself or others and must report any accident and/or damage to school property or persons immediately.

Respect for the Environment
I am expected to care for all materials provided to me whether materials want me or others; for example, textbooks, desks, library books, gym equipment, notebooks and pencils sharpeners, etc.
I am expected to care for the school grounds, school buildings, school buses and refrain from such acts as vandalism, littering and theft.
I am expected to leave places where I eat and work in a clean condition; for example, I must place garbage in the containers provided.
