Summerford Primary School
The idea of a single elementary school to serve the communities of Cottlesville, Summerford, Virgin Arm, Carter's Cove and Chanceport originated with the local Amalgamated School Board which served those communities prior to integration in 1969. This board with representatives from each of those communities previously operated small, one-room schools for the United and Salvation Army churches under the amalgamated system then in place in the province. Altogether there were eight schools in operation under this local board, each having Kindergarten to Grade Seven students.
Construction of the present school building began in the spring of 1969 with Chester Dawe Ltd. of Grand Falls as building contractor.
The new building was not ready when the school opened in September of 1969, so classes were set up in the existing schools in Summerford, Virgin Arm and Carter's Cove. For the first time students from K to 7 were bussed to school.
Finally, in February 1970, the new building was ready, and students, and staff moved into the new Intergrated Elementary.
Students from Boyd's Cove attended the school in 1970-71 and have remained at the school since. In 1996 students served by Morton's Harbour Elementary attended began to attend our school after that school was closed. Finally, in 1998, after restructuring we became a K-4 school.
