Turtle Parts

Here is a list of the different parts of a turtle. You can see them in the picture.

Carapace:  The top shell, an outgrowth of bone.
Flippers: Pond turtles have flat feet, webbed toes for digging in the mud, tearing food and courtship.
Sea turtles have broad flippers for swimming.
Plastron: The bottom shell.
Scutes: Scales over both shells, made of keratin like fingernails.
Neck: A pond turtle can fold its neck into its shell in an S shape, sea turtles can't do that.
Nostrals: They are near the top of the head so the turtle won't have to stick its head far out of the water to breath.
Beak: They have no teeth, but the jagged beak catches, holds and slices food.
Ears: No outside parts to slow it down underwater.
