Salmonid Interpretation Centre
The Salmonid Interpretation Centre is one of the largest Atlantic Salmon Enhancement projects in North America. It is located on the southwest bank of the Exploits River just four kilometres from downtown Grand Falls-Windsor. The centre has two floors. The main floor highlights the development, history, biology, ecology, and habitat of Atlantic salmon. On the other floor, which is the observation level, you can view the salmon through underwater windows as they migrate upstream to their spawning habitat. You might even see brook trout, sticklebacks or live eels. We learned all about the life cycle of the salmon in our science program. Isn't it amazing how salmon can find their way back to the stream where they hatched after spending years in our vast ocean! You can also enjoy a meal from the restaurant or shop for a souvenir in the well-stocked gift shop. The hours of the Salmonid Interpretation Centre are from 8:00 a.m. until dusk daily and it opens in mid June until about mid September. There is a guide available to assist you in your visit and the centre is accessible to the physically disabled. While at the Salmon Ladder (That's what we call it.) not only do you get to see the "king of fish," you get to see the legendary "Grand Falls" from which our town gets its name. Last year about 30,000 salmon were counted at the Bishop Falls Fishway.
