The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #12

      The
Royal Canadian Legion Branch #12 is located on Queen Street in Grand Falls-Windsor. It was built in 1952.  It was the old Cabot Inn first built in Botwood.  During the Second World War it was used to accommodate V.I.P. war visitors stopping over for short intervals.  It was donated by the A.N.D. Company, and a building committee was established for transportation and redesigning the building.  It is now considered one of the best in the province.  In later years the Cater Auditorium was built in honour of a veteran of the First World War, Jack Cater.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 12 is an official military museum, depicting Newfoundland and Labrador's veterans' involvement in two world wars.  It contains many pictures, medals, plaques and stories from World War 1 and World War 2.  The gun outside the legion that overlooks Grand Falls-Windsor came from the H.M.S. Calypso.  This ship was used to train the Royal Navy Reserve during the First World War.
The purpose of building the Legion was so that all the men and woman who fought in World War 1 and World War 2 could have a place to get together and socialize.  Today many of those who fought for our Freedom have died, but we will always remember them.  We wear a Poppy on November 11 of each year to help celebrate their remembrance.  Also, we always have a Remembrance Day Assembly at our school and we invite the veterans to attend.  The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #12 still stands today and it is open to the public daily for free tours.
