Classic Theatre

      The
Classic Theatre opened in 1956 and it is located on High Street.  The original owner was Charlie Edwards.  It was called the Popular Theatre then.  It was purchased by Fastbreak in 1991 and now it is called the Classic Theatre.  It has the largest screen in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The first movie played was White Christmas.  Our teacher Ms. Warr told us that when she was growing up there were two more places to watch movies, the Vogue Theatre on Main Street, and Father Meaney showed movies in the auditorium at the old St. Joseph's School.
Classic Theatre originally had 400 seats.  Now it has 320 seats because a row was taken out for wheelchair accessibility. Most of the equipment is original to the building.  It is a heritage site.  The film is placed on platters and then ran through a projector.  Most movies are shared with Gander and Corner Brook.  The theatre has fire protection doors.  The theatre gets it popcorn and drinks from Brown Derby Wholesale.  We had free popcorn and I got to sit on a chair that is over 50 years old.
In the Classic Theatre's entrance you will see nine fantastic paintings on the concrete walls.  There is even a painting of the Harmsworth brothers, the co-founders of the town of Grand Falls.  I really like the painting of the Beothuk Indian, Demasduit.  Demasduit was Mary March's real name.  If you want to know more about her, you can visit the Mary March Regional Museum.  It was named after her.
