College of the North Atlantic

The College of the North Atlantic wasn’t always in Grand Falls-Windsor.  It opened 40 years ago, and it was called the District Vocational School.  The school areas it covered were those of industrial trade, secretarial, and hair dressing. Eventually, the school became the Central Newfoundland Community College.  With a new name came two new courses.  The school now added first year university and licensed practical nursing courses.
For a third time, the school changed its name and the courses offered.  In 1996, it became a part of the College of the North Atlantic when the House of Assembly, through The College Act, brought together the Cabot College, Labrador College, Eastern College, West Viking College, and Central Newfoundland Regional College to form one public college system.  It is now called College of the North Atlantic, and it is one of 19 campuses.  The school now offers computer courses, business programs, office management, adult basic education, as well as first year university, and licensed practical nursing.
There are about 450 students and 60 faculty and staff members.  Inside the school there are: two science labs, two computer labs, a library, a French lab, a cafeteria, offices, a lecture theatre and classrooms.  The Library/Learning Centre is accessible to students during the week and the resources available complement College programs.  My dad is the librarian.  He was the one who did the tour of the College of the North Atlantic with my class.  Brandon Howell’s dad works there also.  He is the computer technician.
