The Flood in May 2003
The Golf Club in Winter
                                          Grand Falls Golf Club

     The
Grand Falls Golf Club was founded in 1924 and the land used for the golf course was part of the Anglo-Newfoundland Development(A.N.D.) Company’s Dairy Farm near Rushy Pond.  Before this, the dairy farm used to be located where the Curling Club is now.  At that time the cows were used to keep the grass on the fairways short, and they clipped the greens with a hand mower.  In 1937, the remainder of the pasture was given to the club.  Around the 4th hole green you can still see the place where an underground cellar was located.  In the beginning there were nine holes, then six holes, and in the 1930's it became a nine-hole course again.  In 2004 another nine holes were opened on the east side of Rushy Pond Brook, making it an 18-hole course.
The Grand Falls Golf Club is located directly off the Trans-Canada Highway, 2 km west of the town of Grand Falls-Windsor.  The golf club is bounded to the south by the longest river in Newfoundland, the Exploits River.  In May 2003, due to a combination of rain and spring run-off, the golf club flooded.  Holes one, two, three, four, six, eight, and nine were at least 50 percent under water.  At one point there was over a metre of water in the club building.
The layout of the course is flat and open with small undulating greens, making the walk through the fairways easy.  The golf club offers club rentals, a practice green, food and beverage service, and a licenced bar.  In September my class went to the Grand Falls Golf Club.  It was a sunny afternoon.  Our whole class traveled by bus.  My parents and Aldane came with us, too.  Aldane is from Jamaica and he used to help out in our classroom.  He was part of the Jamcayne Exchange Program with Canada World Youth.  We walked over the bridge over Rushy Pond Brook and we watched some golfers hit their golf balls.  We also got a chance to practice our putting.  Mr. Wells, who works there, helped us on the putting green and we hit golf balls into a net.
All of our class and Aldane got a chance to hit golf balls.  We had a very nice view of the golf course.  I would like to play golf when I get older.  It is lots of fun.  The Grand Falls Golf Club is one of Newfoundland and Labrador's best for your ultimate golfing experience, and some people say it has the best finishing hole in our province.
