| Court House (Law Courts) The Court House is both the Provincial Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. It is located on 3 Cromer Avenue in Grand Falls-Windsor. On October 22, 1990 this Court House was opened by the Honorable David F. Gilbert, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation and by the Honorable Graham Flight, Minister of Forestry and Aquaculture. The Minister of Justice at that time was the Honorable Paul Dicks. Before the Court House was opened on Cromer Avenue, it was located in the Provincial Building. In 1910, the court house was on the third floor of the Government or Public Building on High Street. On the Provincial Court side, there are four court clerks, two court judges, two crown attorneys, and two legal aid lawyers. On the Supreme Court side, there are three court clerks and one judge. When I visited the Court House with my class we got to meet Judge Abe Schwartz. Our Flat Pen Pals from Tany's Dell School in Harlow, England also got to meet Mr. Schwartz because they accompanied us on our visit. He was very nice, and my whole class and our flat pen pals got our picture taken with him on the judge’s bench. My flat pen pal’s name was Flat Leila Sabatti. We sat in the jury box and we also sat around the big table in the jury room which has two double doors to keep the sound in. Some of the workers at the court house believe that it is haunted because they say that the building is built on an old Indian burial ground. Some people have seen strange things happening there, such as the doorknobs turning on their own. For some people this still remains a mystery. Emily Henstridge (2005–2006) |
