I chose Midland Transport for my project because my dad has worked there for over 19 years, and he is proud to be a part of their team.
Midland Transport began operations in 1970 in the middle lands of Nova Scotia and this is how they got their name. They started with only six employees, six trucks and a very limited service. In 2005 they celebrated their 35th Anniversary with 1500 employees, 1800 pieces of equipment and they can transport anything from envelopes to full truck loads of freight. They transport freight throughout Newfoundland, Canada, and even the United States. The company is owned by the Irving Family and its head office is located in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Midland Transport purchased Roadway Transport in 1986 with centres in Grand Falls and Corner Brook, and that is when operations began here in Newfoundland. The Grand Falls terminal is located on 17 Duggan Street and it has 20 employees working there. They transport freight west as far as Baie Verte, east as far as Glovertown and to all communities in between. The school supplies that we use in our school are transported by Midland and even our Scholastic book orders are delivered by them!
When our class toured the warehouse we had our Flat Pen Pals from Tany’s Dell School in Harlow, England with us. We saw trolleys, pallet jacks, forklifts, and a special clamp truck that is used to load and unload roll wrapper for our paper mill, Abitibi-Consolidated, in Grand Falls-Windsor. We saw the dispatch office where my dad controls all the trucks from, and we had a tour of one of the transport trucks that even had a bed in it! My flat pen pal, Flat Leila Sabatti, liked being in the transport truck. Mr. Critch, the terminal manager, presented us all with Midland hats and safety bracelets. We had lots of fun and we learned a lot. Thank you Midland!
