Thruway Recreation

Thruway Recreation was opened in 1979 by Desmond Kenny.  His dream was to provide recreation to families throughout Newfoundland Labrador.  When Mr. Kenny died in 1995 his son, Scott, who had been working at Thruway since 1987, took over ownership of the business.  It used to be located on the Trans-Canada Highway but when the concrete medium was being built to separate the highway, Mr. Kenny relocated Thruway Recreation to its current location.  It is now located on 38 Duggan Street where the OMC Distributorship warehouse and then the Charles R. Bell warehouse used to be located.
Thruway Recreation has an 8500 square foot showroom which is one of the largest in North America.  It is a big place and they sell fun stuff to use in the woods.  They sell Arctic Cat snowmobiles and in the 1990s Thruway Recreation was the top seller of Arctic Cat snowmobiles in North America.  They sell clothing and accessories that are constructed with quality, and created to make snowmobiling more enjoyable.  They have also been the top five sellers across Canada for Honda ATVs.  They sell Honda four-stroked outboard engines which are clean, powerful, and fuel efficient.  Today Honda 4-stroke outboards are recognized as among the most technologically advanced in the world.  They sell Bayliner boats which is the number one selling boat in North America.  There are eighteen people who work at Thruway Recreation.   Thruway Recreation has a service control centre, which has two people on staff just to cater to customers requiring service support.  There are also four mechanics on duty at all times.  Three years ago Thruway Recreation was named Business of the Year by the Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce and in 2005 it was inducted into the community’s Business Hall of Fame.
Four of my classmates and I visited Thruway Recreation one day after school with our teacher and Denika Lewis’s mom.  We took our Flat Pen Pals from Tany’s Dell School in Harlow, England with us.  We had a ball trying out all the quads, skidoos, motorcycles, etc..  I really liked the blue Honda motorcycle and my flat pen pal, Flat Cameron Dunn, liked the red Arctic Cat quad.  Thruway Recreation is a family recreation super store and a proud sponsor of our local community television channel, Grand Central.  If you want to find out more about Thruway Recreation you can visit their web site at www.thruwayrecreation.ca.
