Colonial Garage
Colonial Garage and Distributors Limited is a privately owned company that was started by Gordon Elton as a service and gas station. Now it is the largest independent auto parts supplier in Newfoundland Labrador. It is celebrating its 81st birthday this year and it is more commonly known as Colonial Garage. It has been servicing the needs of the transportation industry in our province since 1926. It employs more than 120 Atlantic Canadians at its eleven Newfoundland Labrador and two Cape Breton, Nova Scotia locations. It has been in operation in Grand Falls-Windsor for 30 years and it has seven people working at its Grand Falls-Windsor location on Lincoln Road. Colonial Garage has many services they offer to different customers. They have a parts department where you can go in and get parts for your car or truck. If they don’t have the part, they will check their computer and see if another location has the item and they can get it shipped in, sometimes in the same day. Colonial Garage also has an industrial, marine and automotive machine shop. They sell motors, transmissions, and many types of parts. They service people in the mining, forestry, construction and fishing industry. In 1999 the company received the Canadian Automotive Industry Association Award, “Jobber of the Year.” I have visited Colonial Garage several times with my dad to get parts for our car. On May 23, 2007 four of my classmates and I visited Colonial Garage after school with our teacher and Denika Lewis’s mom. We took our Flat Pen Pals from Tany’s Dell School in Harlow, England with us. The manager, Joe Kelly, gave us a wonderful tour and he even showed me and my flat pen pal, Flat Jordan Routledge, how to use the forklift. My classmates and I really enjoyed our visit to Colonial Garage and I even got to say hello to Boyce. He’s one of my neighbours and he works at Colonial Garage.
